be a member of a professional organization & therefore should comply with the organization's qualification criteria & code of ethics.
be willing to give client references.
be recommended by a veterinarian.
charge a reasonable consultation fee. This is usually a few hundred Rand, bearing in mind that much of the behaviourist's work involves research, administration & report-writing.

RED FLAGS

Behaviourists should NOT...

offer a "success only" guarantee. This is not possible in animal behaviour, as with a doctor, psychologist or veterinarian.
be obviously & unreasonably against veterinarians or other professionals in the animal field.
offer extremely controversial dietary or health advice. Always get a second opinion or do some research of your own.
advise euthanasia of an animal under 6 months of age. A second opinion should always be sought for such a drastic decision.
offer to have an animal euthanased or re-homed himself/herself by taking it with him/her. The final decision & follow-through should always be taken by the animal's owner.
use methods that seem painful, cruel or frightening to your pet or you. This should be reported in writing to the appropriate professional organizations & possibly also to the SPCA.
discourage socializing for all puppies & kittens.

If you come across one or more of these red flags, it is worth seeking a second opinion or choosing another behaviourist.
